Encouraging Education about Gun Violence

Beginning with our very first exhibition we have provided materials for visitors to learn more about gun violence in our communities, how to stay informed, and how to take action. We have compiled an extensive mailing list from our guest books, have handed out many reference sheets with lists of resources and gun violence awareness organizations, and provided educational activities such as scavenger hunts for children and young adults. This particular activity helps young people learn how to pay attention to the various ways artists communicate with the viewer. It is an entertaining way to engage them and help them get to know the individuals in the portraits. Just as adults who are, perhaps, used to looking at art are drawn into the exhibitions and the individual portraits’ details from their experience, young people are also introduced in an invitational way to an empathetic view of the costs of gun violence.
