Portrait of Iseir Bahaadi George by Juliette Watts

From the artist Juliette Watts: Artist Statement It has been a great privilege to participate in this project. I am thankful to Iseir’s mother for welcoming me, and for sharing her family’s story. Iseir was a very special young man and his kindness and generosity were unique. Just as he touched many lives during his short time here, he has also touched me. I’ve been deeply blessed to spend time thinking about him, looking at his photos, and seeking a connection as I worked on the piece. My wish is that this portrait can help in some small way with the healing process for his family. We stand in communion with these families who have suffered deep, unimaginable pain. By coming along side as witnesses, it is my hope that we may lessen the pain just a little bit, as we share their burden and help tell their stories.

From Iseir’s mother Aisha Drayton: Iseir Bahaadj George was a young distinguished scholar. He excelled at all that he put his mind to. While only allowed the opportunity to attend Albany State University before being tragically taken from this world, he left a great impact on his peers and professors. His love for people was unconditional. He had a heart of gold. A heart to give. And a heart for his family. The loss of Iseir has shaken an entire community. He lived a great life. And we could only hope to live out his legacy. He is gravely missed by all that knew him and those who learned about him after his tragedy.

From the curator: This pose, chosen by Juliette, is a moment caught. The confident tilt of Iseir’s head, his hand about to straighten his tie - this is a special day. This is a very intimate, very small, portrait that is totally engaging and charming. It captures a moment of promise which makes it all the more poignant.
