Opening Event for our 2019-20 & 2020-21 Exhibition at Chestnut Hill College
The last two exhibitions of portraits, created in 2019 and 2020, are in a combined show at the beautiful Redmond Room of Chestnut Hill College. The exhibition is sponsored by the Institute for Forgiveness and Reconciliation. The opening event featured a brief introduction by Sister Cathy Nerney, a brief explanation of the Souls Shot Portrait Project, followed by impassioned words from three mothers and one grandmother of victims of gun violence: Kimberly Kamara, Lisa Harmon, Stephanie Johnson, and Sonya Dixon. The packed room of attendees, including many college students, listened in rapt attention to these accounts of how gun violence affects families, friends, and communities. We are so grateful that the College, and the Institute for Forgiveness and Reconciliation, provided such a beautiful space for the artwork to be displayed and such a moving event to allow people to fully engage with these souls and their loved ones.
The Institute is also planning a month of activities that continue the momentum started last Wednesday night at the opening. Please check their website for details on how to take part. (The links are below.) The college is also integrating the exhibition and video of the presentation from that night into their curriculums. Brookdale Community College, where the exhibitions were last, also made good use of the exhibitions as an inroad to discussion of the issue of gun violence and the possible roads to peace. This use of our powerful portraits is truly fulfilling our mission and reaching people who will work towards ending this violence. We are grateful for all the hard work our hosts do to support this project; this mission.
