Champion's Heart Portrait of Izzadeen Burgos by Keisha Whatley

From the artist Keisha Whatley: Izzadeen Burgos' story is one of passion, drive and the will to win. This portrait is a testament to his courageous heart, fun-loving . spirit, and love for his family. Using the Culture Portrait style, the artist offers viewers the opportunity to know "Izzy" as a young man with a powerful story. The more you look, the more you find. Having lost his arm as a very young child, Izzy could have easily wallowed in self pity but he didn't. At the age of 12, he found boxing and found a ring to shine in, winning championships and inspiring others in the process.

From the curator: Keisha has pretty much said it all. One of my personal definitions of a great piece of art is one that can be looked at over and over again and never tire of it. On top of that, there are new details, new messages to be found. This portrait is that. She does not mention that it was gun violence that took his arm as a child, as well as his life as a young man.
