A REMINDER AND A PORTRAIT
We would like to remind readers and supporters that The Souls Shot Portrait Project focuses on the cost of gun violence as it relates to everyone, and we welcome participation from all who have been affected by it. Looking at our entire collection of portraits it is clear that, as in most entrenched systems in our country, people of color are disproportionately affected by this epidemic of gun violence.
And our portraits reflect a tiny, tiny percentage of the actual number of victims.
Pain inflicted by a death or maiming due to being shot is far reaching and deeply, personally felt by families and communities. We hope you will reflect on each of our portraits and each of their stories. We hope you will take notice of the inequities these portraits represent. We hope you will be moved to act.
Jesus I Trust in You Portrait of John Marynowitz by Lisa Domenic
From the artist Lisa Domenic: Police Officer John Marynowitz was permanently disabled by gunfire and his partner was killed in the line of duty in 1993. His injuries have physically confined him to a wheelchair but have not restrained his spirit. John remains positive and trusts that you can move on, no matter what happens in life. Faith allowed John and his family to find purpose in their circumstances and to offer others encouragement and support over the past twenty years. He asked that a cross be held in his right hand and “Jesus I trust in you” be included in the painting.
From the curator: A note about these postings: Because we are unable to have exhibitions in physical spaces for the time being due to the pandemic, we began several weeks ago to post all of our portraits from the first three editions. We started with the third and are now into the first. They are roughly presented in the order that they appear in the catalog. We have posted two portraits of police officers in the past several days for that reason and none other. To restate: This project focuses on the cost of gun violence to everyone. Looking at our entire collections of portraits it is clear that, as in most entrenched systems in our country, people of color are disproportionately affected by this epidemic of gun violence. Pain inflicted by a death or maiming due to being shot is far reaching and deeply, personally felt by families and communities. We hope you will reflect on each of our portraits and each of their stories. Today that is Lisa’s joyful depiction of a soul who discovered a strength to get through his challenges.
