Justin Reyes Portrait of Justin Reyes by Christopher Hardgrove
From Kathy Lees Justin’s mother: Justin was an amazing, bright child. He was curious and had a thirst for learning. Justin enjoyed fishing with his uncle and friends. He was very passionate about nature. He would rescue and feed all creatures in need. Justin dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and owning a pet store one day. He was very loving, thoughtful, giving and generous to his family, friends or anyone in need. He was full of life and a great sense of humor. Justin was a dedicated son and grandson, a loving cousin and nephew. Justin loved life and that is his beautiful legacy that will live on.
From the curator: This portrait is utterly engaging. We have stood in front of it with many viewers and talked at length about the beautiful and layered symbolism Christopher has infused into the image. His forehead becomes a landscape with sunrise and sunset, the use of white paint around the figure seems to be a kind of protective cloud and the grid of cross marks form a diaphanous curtain. Those crosses have many interpretations. Some see birds, others cross-hairs, others religious symbolism. They actually continue onto the back of the painting. The portrait is painted on a white T shirt which gives it a special warmth. It is a charming and heartbreaking piece.
