From the artist, Melissa Joseph: This is my second year participating in Souls Shot. I am deeply inspired by everyone I meet through this project and humbled by the tremendous amounts of strength and love that fill this community

From the curator: This is one of the many portraits that really needs to be seen in person to appreciate the depth and intricacy of the image. The many layers of the technique used here and the beautifully nuanced use of color and tone create a fascinating depiction and reflect the layers of personality that we artists have to interpret without the benefit of knowing these souls. I know Melissa Joseph’s other artwork and her sensitivity to her subject matter. Standing before her interpretation of Jerry I sense a warmth and generosity of spirit. The deep, calming swath of blue on his shoulder connotes a sense of peace but the quickness of the brush stroke speaks to a life ended too early.
